America’s Plastic Makers TM

The state of Michigan is synonymous with American manufacturing, largely from its history as a giant of the automobile industry. Vice President J.D. Vance, however, didn’t speak today at a car factory. He spoke at a plastic manufacturing facility – a decision that speaks volumes.

This Administration is right to highlight the importance of reinvesting in American manufacturing, which will lead to a strong economy, create stable jobs, and bolster our national security. Accordingly, VP Vance’s venue of choice for his speech in Michigan is an important one. Plastic manufacturers are responsible for supporting more than 25% of all U.S. manufacturing with $371 billion in annual revenue across the plastics sector.

As an example of how integrated American plastic manufacturers are with every form of industry in our country, you can simply look at the top three industries in Michigan.

1. Auto manufacturing. Advancement in plastic manufacturing has led to lightweight, durable, and flexible material to keep cars safe while making them more efficient.

2. Technology. American tech companies like Google, which has an Ann Arbor campus, and Lineage Logistics, headquartered in Michigan, could not function without plastic – not only for microchips but also smart phones and computers.

3. Healthcare. Plastic is essential for everyone’s health care needs, from blood bags and IV drips to syringes and bandaging.

Plastic is in so many essential products for a reason – it’s efficient and versatile. American plastic manufacturers are working tirelessly to produce the products we rely on every day. If VP Vance and the administration want to spark a resurgence in American manufacturing, if they want to strengthen the economy, bolster the workforce, and innovate, they should start by enabling domestic plastic manufacturing.
